about

Thank you, Nino Moschella, for helping me turn 4 years and 3 bands worth of material into a cohesive solo album. Thank you, Kendra McKinley, for bringing my vision for The Songbird's Spell to life. This song has been the closest to my heart for so many years and I would not have entrusted it to anyone else. Thank you to the beautiful fleeting collaborations that were The Gospel Flats and Reunion. I'm glad we captured the magic that these particular constellations evoked. Thank you to my dearest ones who have provided so much moral support, Morgan Bolender, Lina Turiya, Josiah Johnson, Aviva Lipkowitz, Cat Munroe, Mia Carlone, Ned Buskirk, Aaron Glass, Trevor Bahnson, Eleanor Henderson and Jon Jackson. Biggest thanks to Graham Patzner, for helping me see this project through for the last 4 years, for growing with the challenges and transitions, and staying committed to learning how to work together in a good way. Thanks to Otis Coleman Patzner for being a great studio baby, and letting me do this thing. Endless thanks for the generosity, time, and talent from the whole Picchi Patzner family, and last but not least for my folks and their partners for your unconditional love and support, Marty & Linda Coleman and Kathy Coleman & John Levine.

Track Name: This Thunder
all my fears and all my faults
all my jumping in, ready or not, baggage and all
and all these years and all these wants
from the tip of my tongue to the top of my lungs
and all my wishing wells ran dry
and all these dams I've built, all this wondering why

and all these tears and all these calls
all my rambling on, standing up tall, and pacing the halls
and all these rights and wrongs don't play along
and all these plans I've made move on

but if I'm good enough smart enough
then I won't be swayed by the rushing wind or the settling dust
If I think hard enough strong enough
then I won't fall in love and I won't blush

but this thunder rolls over me
and it rumbles and rattles till I sing, till I sing
and this thunder calls out my name
and it overwhelms me with wonder again

after all the pain and all the cost
will I write it off, will I fall out of touch, find a place to stop
and after all the rain has time to wash
and these hands will scrub until these bones are buffed, till I'm clean enough
and all these years I've known I'm just alone
and all these hands I hold can't carry me along

but if I'm good enough smart enough
then I'll never be broken by the bow, I'll stretch tight and I'll hold
If I think hard enough strong enough
then I won't have to feel nothing at all

but this thunder rolls over me...
Track Name: Wearing My Heart
I've been wearing my heart on my face these days
everybody's falling in and out of love with me
I've been giving so much and taking what's been coming to me

don't you know not to get attached to me
don't you know not to fall in too deep
cause I'm a little sensitive and you can expect me to leave
the minute you put your expectations on me

oh wearing my heart is wearing me out
swear someday I'm gonna shut the whole thing down
it's wearing me, wearing me, wearing me, wearing me out

I've been waking up happier and stronger these days
yeah everybody's wondering what's gotten into me
in other words other wonders other thunder rolls and rumbles through me

don't you know not to get attached to me
don't you know not to fall in too deep
cause I'm a little sensitive and you can expect me to leave
the minute you put your expectations on me

oh wearing my heart is wearing me out...

don't you know not to get attached to me
don't you know not to fall in too deep
cause I'm a little sensitive and you can't expect me to be
everything and everyone that you can't be

oh wearing my heart is wearing me out...
Track Name: What If I Don't
I wanna want you babe
but I don't wanna need you babe because
you'll just go away
and I wanna love you but you know
I don't wanna need your lovin', 'cause
you'll just go away
oh you'll just up and go away

I fix my supper and I say my grace
but I ain't wishin' nobody's hearin' what I say
no those prayers have all gone away
and when I lay in bed at might
I ain't wishin' nobody was a'holdin' me tight
no those dreams have all gone away
oh they've all up and gone away

but what if I don't need no one to say it's alright
what if this feeling so numb, it goes on all night
what if I don't need no one to read my mind
what if I'm just alone and what if that's just fine

now when I come to see you babe
this time I'm the one who's leaving on that train
you knew I couldn't stay
cause I've got friends and family to tend to
and I've got other things I'd like to get to
before they walk away
gotta catch 'em before they all walk away

but what if I don't need no one to say it's alright
what if this feeling so numb, it goes on my whole life
what if I don't need no one to read my mind
what if I'm just alone and what if that's just fine
what if I'm just alone and what if I'm alright
Track Name: Michael
I've got this power, don't you know it's true
and I'm so scared I'm gonna use it against you

all the games those men taught me to play
well I learned them too well and I'm scared of myself

oh Michael don't let me
pull the rug out from your wide eyed dreams
guard your heart and be ready for me
oh baby be strong when I treat you weak

all the strength I worked so hard to find
well I'm afraid I won't know how to hold back the wildfire

all the nights those men taught me to fight
well they put this fire in my eyes

oh Michael don't let me...

baby hold on when I let you go, hold on
Track Name: The Songbird's Spell
do you remember the time at mother's house
when you let the songbirds fly into the amber clouds
and as the sunlight pierced their feathered blue
you told me they'd rather die free than live caged in this dusty room

so how 'bout I'll be the song and you'll be the flight
and I'll be the lamp post and you'll be the nightingale
just don't fly away now

'cause I'll be strong and you'll be wild
and I'll be grown up and you'll be stoned out of your mind
just don't fight me now

and when I look back now there's something I can't pin down
but these memories of your crazy magic are all that I have now
sister you've got a spell on me that won't let go
how I wish I could understand what happened so long ago

do you remember the look on father's brow
when you punched him in the shoulder and ran out of the house
and as we watched you crying in the street
I said father why is it her instead of me

'cause I know I'll be the road and you'll be the winding
and I'll be the rope and you'll be the uncoiling
just don't run from me

and when I look back now there's something I can't pin down...

so I'll be the song and you'll be the flight
and I'll be the one who stays up all night
and I'll find a husband and I'll raise a family
and I'll be the house you knock down when you're angry
and I'll be the deep roots and you'll be the ragged shoes
and I'll be the one who stays caged in this dusty room

oh sister you've got a spell on me that won't let go
how I wish I could know, how I wish I could know
Track Name: Johnny
Johnny you told me not to come calling
I said Johnny I'm not just a fair-weather friend
I'm coming over gonna hold your hand

when I found you you were playing the blues
hanging over your porch with a bottle of
makers mark did you want me to take it from you

Johnny I wrote you a song
sweetest song I wrote for anyone
do you want me to play it for you

you curled up in your soft green chair
rocking back and forth with your hands clutching your hair
did you know how much I loved you right there

maybe it was the booze, maybe it was the song
maybe it was the truth, hit you too damn hard

but you locked yourself in your little room
crying over your daughters and your wedding band
did you want me to break down the door
break it down and save your drunken heart

maybe it was a ruse, maybe there was no gun
maybe it was for the bruise you left on my arm

maybe it was a ruse, maybe there was no gun
maybe it was for the bruise you left on my arm

when you found me, I was crying a stream
hiding out in my car thinkin' 'bout nine one one
did you want me to call 'em
did you want me to call someone

I remember then, thinking Johnny my friend
I'd do it over and over and over again
if you wanted me to, did you want me to
Track Name: Modern Mythology
you're shaking, I can feel you
heart's waiting for the other shoe
when you realize that I can't hold on to
all the great clay ribs that God gave you

so I make pretend that I'm above you
my heart's aching for the other shoe
when you realize I can't hold a candle to
the great blonde angel on the pedestal

we get caught up in modern mythology
warmed by the fire of the same old story
that it's the ones like you and me who do the hurting
oh baby please, please don't believe everything

they say we both want what we can't have
we don't see the fence, we see the greener grass
and our whole lives we won't be satisfied
cause the right one's always standing on the other side

we get caught up in modern mythology...

please, please, please, please, don't believe everything
Track Name: Let There Be Dark
it's a silly fine little line we walk
when my strumming hands get tired and my voice is shot
we've been waiting for the line to cross over to the dark
do you want it to or not

well it's a fickle senseless rhetoric we talk
when my whiskey breath is warm but the mic is hot
we've been waiting for the heat to drop and sink into the fog
do you want it to or not

wait don't go so far, I wanna catch up to where you are
let there be dark, let the sun rise fall

well it's a tricky tipsy delicate dance we trot
and my weary feet are following like a fox
we've been waiting for the light to wash over all we've lost
do you want it to or not

wait don't go so far, I wanna catch up to where you are
let there be dark, let the sun rise stop
still the waves and walk, I wanna be where you are
Track Name: The Whole Buffalo
when you're done convincing me and I'm done convincing you
honey you know we're just gonna do whatever we're gonna do

when I'm done crying over things that ain't true
when you're done fighting against the wings that lift you
when I'm done lying about the diamonds in my shoes
oh honey you know we're just gonna do what ever we're gonna do

I won't hide my devotion, I won't cover my love
with a cold ambivalence or readiness to run
I am buffalo abundance, readiness to give
my whole damn body was built for it

so you can take your sweet time testing the depths of my love
my tears, they are fleeting, and my God is enough
and you know I'll keep on walking, I'll move steady on through
cause honey you know we're just gonna do whatever we're gonna do

and I won't hide my devotion...

so the gifts you've been receiving, you can keep them bones and all
don't you know when you take the buffalo, you take the buffalo whole

so I won't hide my devotion...
