Now We Know the Dark © Chelsea Coleman 2021 It's your first California spring Welcome to the blossoming Just when you thought the darkness had enveloped everything That's when the cherry buds start opening Welcome to the bay laurels and the redwood fairy rings Look at the water oaks in their ever winter green I know it's only February I know you didn't see it coming But not we know the dark ain't as far as it seems Now we know the spark is not everlasting Now we know to guard it with every ounce of our being Now we know how hard it is to keep promises to seeds We give in to the dark every night Then we give in to the daylight We give in to the seasons of our fleeting lives Every time, every time, every time It's your first California fall Are you ready to lose it all The fire is knocking at your door Are you ready, are you ready for more It swallowed up the bay laurels and the redwood fairy rings (We give in to the dark every night) It swallowed up the water oaks in their ever summer green (We give in to the daylight) I know it's only August eighteenth (We give in to the seasons of our fleeting lives) I know you didn't see it coming (Every time, every time, every time) But not we know the dark ain't as far as it seems (There’s nothing for you in the next life, darling) Now we know the spark is not everlasting (This is the end of the line) Now we know to guard it with every ounce of our being (There’s no announcement and there’s no warning) Now we know how hard it is to trust promises from seeds (For the way you say your goodbyes) We give in to the dark every night Then we give in to the daylight We give in to the seasons of our fleeting lives Every time, every time, every time

Some Have Called it Hell © Chelsea Coleman 2022 If you could see me now You wouldn’t fret about The longing or the doubt The way it all turned out You’d know that I’d be proud You made it through those years While so many disappeared Some have called it hell You’ve done so very well Holding on to yourself

about

I wrote Now We Know the Dark in February 2021 as a part of a global art project, Telephone. I wrote it to honor and commemorate a series of difficult seasons, all of which were enveloped within the pandemic, followed by the startling arrival of spring. Here is what I wrote about the piece for the project:
The pieces of art I received from Daniel Potts (UK) and Kathleen Miller (US) filled me with a sense of wonder and presence. Through the themes of seasons, growth, mortality, and exploration, these works brought to mind all that we choose to explore and all that we succumb to outside of our control. The song I composed braids together three different melodies, all of which arose as separate songs. I wanted my piece to not only translate the message in the artwork that came before it but in doing so, honor the structure of TELEPHONE and the weight of the historical moment that has birthed this giant web of art. After taking in the two pieces I translated, I knew right away I wanted to write about seeds & seasons, promises, choices, and hope, as well as the falling away of all we have taken for granted. The TELEPHONE project itself contains the magic and the promises of seeds – the message itself like the DNA of a seed that becomes a mass of innumerable branches, eventually falling away to become the soil that nurtures anything that may grow there next. And like all endings, it generates an explosion of beginnings. I wanted the melodies to resemble these strands of DNA, and for the lyrics to honor both the personal & specific ways we respond to change as well as the collective & generational belonging available to us in the ways we succumb to and simultaneously protect ourselves & each other from death.
